What is Penhold Grip?
The penhold grip is one of the two fundamental grips in table tennis, alongside the shakehand grip. Named for its resemblance to holding a pen or pencil, the penhold grip has been used by countless world champions and is particularly dominant among players from Asian countries.
Types of Penhold Grip
There are two main variations of the penhold grip:
- Chinese Penhold (CPG): The most common variation, where the backhand side of the paddle rests against the index and middle fingers.
- Japanese/Korean Penhold: A variation with slightly different finger positioning and padding placement.
Advantages of Penhold Grip
- Versatility: Allows for quick transitions between forehand and backhand strokes
- Wrist Flexibility: Greater wrist mobility for spin and angle variation
- Backhand Power: Excellent for generating backhand loops and aggressive strokes
- Compact Technique: Smaller swing arc allows for faster stroke execution
How to Hold the Penhold Grip
Step 1: Hold the paddle handle like you're holding a pen or pencil, with your thumb and index finger on opposite sides of the handle, just below the blade.
Step 2: Your middle, ring, and pinky fingers curl around the back of the handle for support and stability.
Step 3: Keep your wrist relaxed but firm, allowing natural movement during strokes.
Step 4: Position the paddle at a slight angle, with the blade facing slightly forward.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Gripping too tightly, which limits wrist movement
- Thumb positioned too high on the handle
- Inconsistent grip pressure during different strokes
- Not adapting grip for backhand and forehand transitions
